The recommended spark plug for your Polaris RANGER XP 900 or RANGER CREW XP 900 is NGK® MR7F, part number 3022662, as noted in the specifications section of your Owner's Manual. Using a non-recommended spark plug can result in serious engine damage. Always use the Polaris-recommended spark plugs or their equivalent.
As noted in the Periodic Maintenance Chart in your Owner's Manual, inspect spark plugs and replace as needed every 100 hours, 12 months or 1,000 miles (1,600 km).
Always torque spark plugs to specification, which is 7.4 ft-lbs (10 Nm).
Spark plug condition is indicative of engine operation. The spark plug firing end condition should be read after the engine is warmed up and the vehicle is driven at higher speeds. Immediately check the spark plug for correct color.
A hot exhaust system and engine can cause burns. Wear protective gloves when removing a spark plug for inspection.
To inspect the spark plugs, do the following:
1. Lift the cargo box to access the spark plugs.
2. Remove the spark plug cap.
3. Using the spark plug wrench provided in the tool kit, remove the plug by rotating the plug counterclockwise.
4. Inspect the spark plug.
- A normal insulator tip is gray, tan or light brown. There will be few combustion deposits. The electrodes are not burned or eroded. This indicates the proper type and heat range for the engine and the service.
- The tip should not be white. A white insulator tip indicates overheating, caused by use of an improper spark plug or incorrect throttle body adjustments.
- A wet fouled insulator tip is black. A damp oil film covers the firing end. There may be a carbon layer over the entire nose. Generally, the electrodes are not worn. General causes of fouling are excessive oil, use of non-recommended oil or poor fuel quality.
- Using a wire-type feeler gauge, measure the spark plug electrode gap. If necessary, correct the gap by carefully bending the side electrode. The electrode gap should be 0.7 to 0.8mm.
5. Install the new spark plug or reinstall the old spark plug using the spark plug wrench provided in the tool kit. Torque to 7.4 ft-lbs (10 Nm). Ensure the spark plug gap measures 0.31" (0.7-0.8 mm).
6. Reinstall the spark plug cap.
7. Lower the cargo box.
