All Polaris snowmobiles that are equipped with a battery will have either a dry shipped Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) battery or a low maintenance battery. Batteries are used on snowmobiles equipped with factory installed electric starts or accessory Polaris electric start kits.
Using a new battery that has not been fully charged can damage the battery and result in a shorter life. It also can hinder your snowmobile's performance. The single most important thing about maintaining a sealed battery is to keep it fully charged. Since the battery is sealed and the sealing strip cannot be removed, you must use a voltmeter or multimeter to measure DC voltage.
Always verify battery condition before and 1 to 2 hours after the end of charging.
Note that an overheated battery may explode, causing severe injury or death. Always watch charging times carefully. Stop charging if the battery becomes very warm to the touch. Allow it to cool before resuming charging.
Always keep battery terminals and connections free of corrosion. If cleaning is necessary, remove corrosion with a terminal brush. Washing with a solution of one tablespoon baking soda and one cup water. Rinse well with tap water and dry off with clean shop towels.
Dry Shipped AGM Battery
Dry shipped AGM batteries are included on snowmobiles with factory installed electric starts. They feature removable strips on the top. Never add distilled water to them.
The nominal voltage of one of these batteries is 12.8 Volts when fully charged. If the voltage falls below 12.5V, charge it immediately or the battery runs the risk of sulfation.
Polaris recommends using a BatteryMINDer® 2012 AGM 2-AMP charger (part number 2830438) with dry shipped AGM batteries. If you do not drive your snowmobile for more than two weeks, maintain its charge with the BatteryMINDer® 2012 AGM 2-AMP charger. If you plan to store your snowmobile for one month or longer, remove the battery from the snowmobile and store the battery in a cool, dry location. Continue to maintain the battery with the BatteryMINDer® 2012 AGM 2-AMP charger and inspect the battery every 60 days.
Certain models can be charged through the power socket with the BatteryMINDer® Accessory Vehicle Power Plug (part number 2830518).
The battery charging port can be found in one of following three locations: in the right footwell of the vehicle (1), near the rear of the seat (2), or beneath the right-side access panel (3). For more information, refer to the Battery Section in your Owner's Manual.
Low Maintenance Battery
AGM low maintenance batteries are used as service replacement batteries. They feature non removable caps on the top of the battery. Never add distilled water or electrolyte to them. Doing so will damage the case and shorten the life of the battery.
The nominal voltage of one of these batteries is 12.8 Volts when fully charged. If the voltage falls below 12.5V, charge it immediately or the battery runs the risk of sulfation.
Polaris recommends using a BatteryMINDer® 2012 AGM 2-AMP charger (part number 2830438) with AGM low maintenance batteries. If you do not drive your snowmobile for more than two weeks, maintain its charge with the BatteryMINDer® 2012 AGM 2-AMP charger.
