When changing the oil on your Polaris Sportsman, always wear safety glasses and nitrile gloves. The PS-4 Oil Change Kit is part number 2877473. The Extreme Duty Oil Change Kit is part number 2878924.

To change the oil and filter on a 2020+ Sportsman XP 1000 S, follow these steps:

    1. Park the vehicle on a flat, level surface in a well-ventilated area.

    2. Place the transmission in park.

    3. Set the parking brake.

    4. Start the engine and allow it to warm up at idle for 2 to 3 minutes.

    5. Stop the engine.

    6. Remove any debris near the dipstick and remove the dipstick.

    7. Clean the area around the oil drain plug.

    8. Place a drain pan under the engine crankcase. Tip: Place a rag in the bottom of the drain pan to prevent the splashing of oil.

    9. Remove the drain plug with a 6mm Allen socket. Allow the oil to drain completely. Caution: Hot oil can cause burns to skin. Do not allow hot oil to contact skin.

    10. Using a T40 TORX® socket, remove the oil filter cover plate by loosening the three fasteners holding it in place.

    11. Turn the filter counter-clockwise with a 2.5-inch oil filter wrench to remove it.

    12. Using a clean dry cloth, clean the filter sealing surface on the crankcase.

    13. Lubricate the O-ring on the new filter with a film of fresh engine oil. Check to make sure the O-ring is in good condition.

    14. Install the new filter and rotate it clockwise by hand until the filter gasket contacts the sealing surface, and then turn it an additional 3/4 of a turn. The oil filter is part number 2520799. It is included in both oil change kits.

    15. Install a new sealing washer on the drain plug. The sealing washer is part number 5812232. Notice: The sealing surfaces on the drain plug and crankcase should be clean and free of burrs, nicks or scratches.

    16. Reinstall the drain plug. Torque to 12 ft-lbs (16 Nm).

    17. Clean any residual oil off the vehicle.

    18. Reinstall the oil filter plate. Torque to 7 ft-lbs (9 Nm).

    19. Add 2 quarts (1.9 L) of the recommended oil. Do not overfill.

    20. Reinstall the dipstick.

    21. Start the engine. Allow it to idle for 1 to 2 minutes.

    22. Stop the engine.

    23. Check for leaks.

    24. Remove the dipstick and wipe with a clean shop towel. Reinstall the dipstick fully and remove again to check the oil level. Add oil as needed to bring the level to the upper mark on the dipstick.

    25. Wipe up any residual oil that may have collected on vehicle components.

    26. Dispose of the used oil and filter properly.

    27. In addition to changing the engine oil, make sure to grease the propshaft and clean the spark arrestor.

    • Access the grease zerk on the propshaft through the driver’s rear wheel well.
    • Then move to the spark arrestor in the rear of the vehicle.
    • Start by removing the four silencer cap fasteners with a 3/8-inch socket and remove the silencer cap.
    • Using an 8mm socket, loosen the spark arrestor fastener and pull out to remove. Clean as needed.
    • Reinstall the spark arrestor. Torque the fastener to 8 ft-lbs (11 Nm).
    • Reinstall the silencer cap and fasteners. Torque to 10 ft-lbs (14 Nm).
