To remove and install the front lower A-arm on your RANGER XP Kinetic, follow these steps:
1. Park the vehicle on a flat, level surface, ensure it is in PARK and remove the key.
2. Remove the center cap from the wheel.
3. Remove and discard the cotter pin with pliers.
4. Continue by loosening the axle nut with a 27mm socket.
5. Using a 19mm socket with breaker bar, loosen the lug nuts while the vehicle is on the ground but do not remove at this time.
6. Safely elevate the vehicle. Reference your Owner’s Manual for proper lifting techniques.
7. Once safely elevated, remove the lug nuts and set aside.
8. Remove the wheel and set aside.
9. Release the harness clip for the pre-wired winch connector with a pry tool.
10. Remove and discard the lower bumper fasteners and nuts using a 15mm socket and 15mm wrench.
11. Remove the upper bumper fasteners and nuts.
12. Lift the bumper off the vehicle and set aside.
13. Using a 5mm Allen socket, move to the brake caliper and loosen the pad adjustment screw but do not remove.
14. Use a 15mm socket to remove and discard the upper and lower caliper mounting fasteners.
15. Continue by carefully removing the caliper from the rotor and then support it with a wire hanger, rope or retention strap to avoid damaging the brake line.
16. Remove the castle nut and cone washer and set aside.
17. Remove the wheel hub from the axle and set aside.
18. Using a 6mm Allen socket and 18mm wrench, loosen the lower ball joint nut until it is flush with the end of the ball joint stud.
19. Using a sledgehammer, strike the end of the ball joint nut to loosen it from the joint.
20. Remove and discard the ball joint nut.
21. Using an 18mm socket and 18mm wrench, remove the lower A-arm fasteners with washers and discard the nuts.
22. Pivot the arm mounts out of the vehicle and lift on the ball joint end to remove the ball joint stem from the bearing carrier.
23. If reusing the A-arm, thoroughly clean with a shop rag before reinstalling.
24. Inspect the ball joint and ball joint boot for wear, tears, or damage and replace if necessary.
25. Inspect the A-arm bushings and pivot tubes for damage or wear and replace as necessary. When reinstalling the bushings, ensure the tapered end is facing out. Use a flathead screwdriver to ensure the control arm bushings are fully installed inside the arm before installing the pivot seals.
26. If replacing the A-arm, the A-arm shields will need to be transferred to the new arm.
27. Insert the ball joint end into the bearing carrier.
28. Pivot the arm up and align with the mounting holes in the frame.
29. Reinstall the fasteners and washers from the front of the vehicle and secure with new nuts.
30. Continue by installing a new ball joint fastener.
31. Torque the lower A-arm fasteners to 81 ft-lbs (110 Nm).
32. Torque the ball joint nut to 30 ft-lbs (40 Nm).
33. Insert the axle through the wheel hub and push the hub in until fully seated.
34. Reinstall the washer, with the domed side out, and reinstall the castle nut.
35. Carefully slide the caliper assembly onto the brake disc ensuring the brake rotor is between the two pads. Before continuing, ensure any items used to secure the brake caliper are removed from the wheel well.
36. Install new upper and lower caliper mounting fasteners, and torque to 27-30 ft-lbs (37-41 Nm).
37. Tighten the pad adjustment screw clockwise until the stationary pad contacts the disc and then loosen it a half-turn counterclockwise.
38. Set the bumper on the chassis and align the mounting holes.
39. Install new upper fasteners from the front of the vehicle and secure with new nuts.
40. Install new lower fasteners from underneath the vehicle and secure with new nuts.
41. Torque the bumper fasteners to 30 ft-lbs (40 Nm).
42. Align the pre-wired winch connector harness clip with the mounting point on the bumper and press in until fully seated.
43. Reinstall the wheel on the vehicle and tighten the lug nuts until fully seated.
44. Safely lower the vehicle until the tires begin to touch the ground. This will help keep the wheel in place when torquing.
45. Once lowered, torque the lug nuts to 120 ft-lbs (163 Nm) in a crisscross pattern.
46. Torque the castle nut to 180 ft-lbs (245 Nm).
47. Insert a new cotter pin and bend around the castle nut to secure. If necessary, tighten the castle nut to align the cotter pin holes.
48. Reinstall the dust cap onto the wheel and ensure it is fully seated.
49. Lower the vehicle completely.
